Bronze Medal For New Zealand at ISA Worlds

New Zealand has taken bronze at the 2017 ISA World Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboard Championship completed at Vorupor, Denmark overnight (Sunday 10th September).

The team finished third in the final race of the event, the team relay, which was enough to hold down bronze.

New Zealand went into the final day defending their team ranking with Hawaii close behind.  However, the team also had their sights on higher honours, a win in the relay race and a fourth for France being enough to elevate New Zealand to second overall and their best ever result.

The relay started well with Sam Shergold (Mnt) coming in neck and neck with Australia’s Lachie Landsdown on the prone paddleboards after the first lap.  Annabel Anderson (Wanaka) then had two uncharacteristic falls on her lap dropping the team back to third behind France.

Jasmine Smith (Gis) pulled the team back to second on her lap before our final paddler Trevor Tunnington (Gold Coast) took off for the final leg.  However, it was the powerful Frenchman Arthur Arutkin that pulled Tunnington back to snatch second dashing Kiwis hopes of higher honours.

Australia went on to take an easy win ahead of France in second, the Kiwis in third, Denmark in fourth and Hawaii in fifth.

Australia’s win in the relay assured them of the gold medal and continued domination of the event.  France took silver ahead of New Zealand with Hawaii taking home the copper medal.
